Vacuum Cleaner Belt Types

#1 Flat Vacuum Belts - These are the most common belts used in vacuum cleaners. Flat vacuum belts have a smooth inner and outer surface and vary in width and thickness. They are made out of special rubber compounds that are designed to provide the appropriate amount of tension for the vacuum cleaner they were designed to fit. Flat belts are more durable than round belts, however, they should still be replaced every 6-8 months (depending on use) to maintain optimum vacuum cleaner preformance.

#2 Round Vacuum Belts - The round vacuum belt was the earliest belt type used in vacuum cleaners. Round belts are not very durable because they are located where the dirt and debris enters the vacuum cleaner. As result, the belt is subject to constant friction, causing it wear quickly. It is recommended that round belts be replaced every 6 months (depending on use) to maintain optimum vacuum cleaner preformance.

#3 Geared Vacuum Belts - These are also known as "Cogged Belts" and feature teeth that protrude on the inside of the belt. Geared belts are engineered to transfer power as efficiently as possible with less belt slippage than flat or round vacuum belts. Although they are made of rubber, geared belts are infused with different materials for added strength. Geared belts do not stretch as quickly as flat or round belts, but the teeth on the belts do wear over time and cause slipping. It is reccommended that geared belts be replaced every 1-2 years (depending on use) to maintain optimum vacuum cleaner preformance.

#4 V-Type/ #5 Serpentine Vacuum Belts - These two belts are essential the same type of belts. They both feature grooves or ribbes (which form V shapes) that run the inside of the belt. This design offers the strength of a geared belt, without the vibration noise caused by geared belts. It is reccommended that V-Type/ Serpentine belts be replaced every 1-2 years (depending on use) to maintain optimum vacuum cleaner preformance.
